Caughlin Club Greenbelt Restoration Project
|
|
Culvert area behind
Caughlin Club that will be redone. |
|
Culvert area
damaged in the 2006 flood. |
|
After the repair, similar
to what will be done behind Caughlin Club. |
|
* Native re-vegetation behind the "first four ponds" area in the main lower greenbelt has taken hold. The fence is down,
the area is accessible, and is mostly on drip rather than overhead watering.
* With the Caughlin Club area restoration on temporary hold, the plan had been to move other seasonal work forward,
and a number of dead pines have been removed, but its just too hot to plant now, so don't expect replacement until Fall.
* Dog-post maintenance can be done in any weather, so it is being used as a fill-in. Hopefully we'll see some graffiti gone
and not return.
* Work is being done to improve traffic visibility in the WestPoint/McCarran area, and in the medians in front of the Scolaris
Shopping Center.
* Village Green Park ball fields and volleyball area are being reconditioned with new sand (volleyball area) and decomposed
granite (baseball infield) to repair damage and erosion
* A new "water conservation area" is being developed for an area of Caughlin Creek/Deer Creek adjacent to the upper walking
path
(at the creek crossing) to replace what now looks like a field-of-weeds. Several homeowners had expressed concern about what
was happening, but after Randy's explanation of the plan, seem delighted with the concept.
* Algae removal from the ponds is in high season. If it's hot, there is algae. Many have questioned the handwork to clean this up,
but because our ponds are really parts of moving streams they cannot be treated successfully with chemicals. The chemicals would
just end up in the Truckee River. The "red" algae bloom is a very aggressive aquadic plant species; however, the best cure has
been to let nature take its course, and the ponds will clear up.
* Cat Tails, love 'em or hate 'em - the split is about even. Some will be going, others will remain. Many of the areas where cattails
abound are actually "natural filter" areas that help clean the water as it passes through the Ranch.
* Defensible space maintenance continues with clearing fast-growing grasses from buffer areas.
